Local Public Health History
Most people are most familiar with the health care provided by doctors, nurses and dentists at clinics and hospitals. These health care professionals provide specific treatment for specific diseases or medical conditions. Public Health professionals promote wellness and prevent disease and injury to protect the health of the entire community.
Nebraska is one of the few states in the nation that has not had a statewide public health system until the passage of LB692 in 2001. Although many competent organizations and agencies administered programs and provided services that were under the public health umbrella, the coordination of the public health programs was very fragmented. Northeast Nebraska Public Health Department was established in 2002 shortly after the passage of the LB692 that allowed public health departments obtain money to operate. With the help of the new local public health departments, implementation of programs and tracking public health data to monitor health threats to the public is much more efficient.
